Should Your Med Spa Offer Free Consultations? Use the Walk-Away Test

"Book your free consultation" is on almost every med spa website. It feels generous from the clinic's side. From the patient's side, it often sounds like a sales meeting. Here is a simple test for what to offer instead.

Why "free consultation" is a weak ad

  • It sounds like selling. The patient expects to be told what to buy.
  • There is nothing to take home. They leave with advice, not a result.
  • Everyone offers it. It does not give anyone a reason to choose you.
  • It asks for trust first. The patient has to give up an hour before they know if you are any good.

The walk-away test

Ask one question about any offer. If this person takes it, buys nothing and never comes back, did they still get something they would normally pay for?

Think of a dental practice that brings in new patients with free whitening instead of a free exam. People come because they want whiter teeth. While they are in the chair, the dentist still notices what needs care. The exam happens inside the visit. It is not the reason for the visit.

The same idea works in a med spa. The treatment is the gift. The conversation about what could come next happens during it. Any screening or consent the treatment itself requires still comes first.

What passes and what fails

Common new patient offers against the walk-away test
OfferPasses?Why
Free consultationNoAdvice only, no result.
Free skin analysis or scanNo, on its ownUseful information, but the patient still has not been treated.
Free LED add-onWeakMost patients see it as an extra.
Free complete HydraFacial, express facial or dermaplaningYesA treatment people normally pay for, with a visible result.
20% off a first treatmentNot a giftIt is a discount. The patient still pays.

If you give a treatment, give the whole thing. A shortened version that no longer delivers the result fails the test too.

Where the consultation belongs

During a real treatment, the provider has time to see the skin up close and talk. If the patient mentions something they want to change, the provider can explain an option. That conversation feels like care because the patient already got something. Our guide on what to notice during a HydraFacial has a simple script for it.

When a free consultation is still the right call

Some treatments need a consultation before anything else happens, such as CO2 laser, medical weight loss, fillers or anything with real screening. Keep those consultations free if that is your policy. Just present them as a planning step for someone who is already interested, not as the hook for a stranger scrolling Instagram.

Write the offer honestly

If you advertise something as free, show the conditions at the start, including new patients only, limited appointments and any eligibility checks. The FTC's guide on free offers says the terms should be clear and conspicuous at the outset (FTC guide to the word "free"). Never make a free treatment depend on buying something else or referring a friend.

This is one of the rules behind the First Visit Method. To choose the treatment itself, see how to choose a new patient offer.

Common questions

Is a free skin analysis a good offer?

It is a good part of a visit but a weak reason to come. The patient leaves with information, not a result. Build the analysis into a real treatment instead of advertising it on its own.

Won't a free treatment attract people who never buy?

Some visitors will not buy that day. They still experienced your clinic, and some may return. Keep the free slots limited, track what each visit leads to over 90 days, and watch no-shows more closely than same-day sales.

Do I need to disclose terms on a free offer?

Yes. Show who qualifies, how many appointments are available and any screening required, right where the offer appears. Hidden conditions discovered after booking damage trust and can create legal problems.
